Welcome to an excursion in Jämtland!
On Wednesday afternoon, June 25th, we have arranged an unforgettable excursion through the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Östersund. This is a unique opportunity to not only immerse yourself in the stunning scenery but also gain deeper insights into how moose hunting is conducted in Sweden and the impact moose can have on young production forests during the winter when they search for food. We promise this will be an excursion to remember—don’t miss out!
Our goal is to engage multiple senses during this experience. As managers and researchers of moose populations, we must also broaden our perspective to better understand society’s relationship with the moose and its significance in our rich cultural heritage. We want to frame this excursion within the magnificent landscape that Östersund has to offer, making it a truly holistic experience.
The day will conclude at Jamtli, where history, art, and cultural heritage come together in a remarkable setting. In large, beautifully arranged tents, we will indulge in a three-course dinner inspired by Sami traditions.
This excursion was made possible through a wonderful collaboration with the Municipality of Östersund, to whom we extend our heartfelt gratitude.
Route
Before the dinner at Jamtli in Östersund, we have planned three stops along the way, which are outlined below.
Since we expect a total of 200 delegates at the conference, we will divide participants into two groups. This means
that one group will start the excursion by bus, while the other will begin aboard the boat M/S Thomée, which will
take passengers out to Andersön. Below, we describe only one of the routes, starting with the bus departure from Hotel Gamla Teatern.
Moose and forestry
On this stop we will discuss the role of moose in society, with a specific focus on their impact on forests and timber
production. Sweden and neighbouring countries has for a very long time had a very special focus on studying the impact of
moose within silviculture. Representatives from the forestry sector will host this stop.
Moose and hunting
At the second stop, we will highlight the cultural significance of moose hunting, focusing specifically on
Sweden’s tradition of hunting with specially bred dogs—löshundsjakt (free-ranging dog hunting).
This unique
cultural practice is something the hunting community hopes to have recognized on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
This stop will be hosted by the Swedish Hunters’ Association at Moose Garden, where there will also be an
opportunity for close encounters with live moose.
Moose food and nutritional value
The third stop for those starting by bus will be at Andersön, a stunning nature reserve and a popular
excursion destination. The location offers breathtaking views, especially from the boat dock, where you can
admire the scenic landscape across to Frösön. At this stop, we will serve refreshments while discussing our
pine forests and the berry-rich underbrush that often thrives in these areas. Blueberry shrubs are not only
attractive to berry pickers but also serve as a vital food source for moose during much of the year.
The boat M/S Thomée will drop off one group, who have traveled by boat from Östersund, and pick up the other
group for the return journey to Östersund.
Jamtli museum and dinner
We conclude our excursion with a visit to Jamtli, where we continue our cultural journey through the region.
At Jamtli, you will step into history, art, and cultural heritage in an immersive environment that both delights
and inspires. Within the Jamtli grounds, we have set up three large traditional Sámi tents, furnished with
tables and a cozy stove.
Here, we will enjoy a dinner with a distinct Sámi touch, crafted by the award-winning chef Elaine Häävi.
After this unforgettable experience, delegates will make their way back to the hotel at their own pace—a scenic
20-minute walk through the Swedish Midsummer night, embraced by the enchanting glow of the Nordic light.
